Questions, answered.
What is LastTrack?
LastTrack is a free app for writing songs with friends. Start a song battle, where everyone writes a song to the same theme and votes for their favorites, or a collab, where friends add tracks to one shared song. It runs in the browser on a phone or a computer, so there is nothing to install.
How does a song battle work?
The host sets up to 12 rounds, each with a theme, a clock and optional rules such as tempo, key or length. Every player writes a new song for each round before the clock runs out, then everyone votes. Scores add up across the rounds, and the player with the most points at the end is crowned the champ.
How does voting work in a LastTrack battle?
Voting is blind. Entries show up as Entry A, Entry B and so on, and names stay hidden until the round closes. Each voter shares a set of credits across the other players' songs, giving more to the ones they like best, and nobody can vote for their own song. A song's score is its share of all the credits given that round.
How do I make a song with friends online?
On LastTrack, tap Start a collab, pick a tempo and key, and share the collaborator link. Friends open the link, choose a nickname and add their own tracks from their phone or computer. Everyone hears the same song as it grows, and no one needs an account.
Do I need an account to use LastTrack?
Not for collabs: anyone with the link can join and add tracks. Battles need a free account so votes and scores belong to real players. You can sign in with email, Google, Apple or TikTok.
Is LastTrack free?
Yes. Starting battles, joining battles, making collabs and exporting your songs are all free.
Can I make music on my phone?
Yes. LastTrack is built for phones first. Tap Record, then tap a track to open a keypad with the notes in your song's key, and drum tracks show kick, snare, hats and more. It works on a computer too, where you can type notes with the keyboard.
Do I need to know music theory to write a song?
No. By default the keypad only shows notes in your song's key, so the notes you pick fit together. Tempo presets help you start fast, and you can turn on all 12 notes whenever you want more freedom.
What is a music tracker?
A tracker is a way to write music on a grid. Each column is an instrument, each row is a step in time, and playback runs from top to bottom. LastTrack uses a tracker because it is quick to learn and easy to use on a small screen.
What instruments can I use on LastTrack?
Each song can have up to 12 tracks. Instruments come in sound packs: Core, Electronic, Chiptune, Synth-pop, Lo-fi, Acoustic and Hand drums, with synth and recorded drum kits, recorded guitars, basses, keys, leads and pads. Any track can also have one effect: reverb, echo, filter, drive, chorus or bitcrush.
Where do the recorded sounds come from?
The recorded drum kits and guitars come from free sound libraries released as CC0 or public domain. Analog drum machine is Michael Fischer's 1994 TR-808 sample set. Garage kit is the Salamander Drumkit by Alexander Holm. Brushed drums and Crate drums come from Karoryfer Samples (Swirly Drums and Gogodze Phu Vol II). World percussion comes from the Versilian Community Sample Library by Versilian Studios. Studio kit uses the drum samples in Sonic Pi, recorded by freesound.org contributors. Guitar is the Spanish Classical Guitar from the FreePats project. Steel-string guitar is Jeff Learman's recording of a Martin HD28, from the Discord SFZ GM Bank. Electric guitar, Archtop guitar and Hollowbody guitar come from Karoryfer Samples (Emilyguitar, Shinyguitar and Black and Green Guitars). Thank you to everyone who shared them. Every other sound is made by LastTrack. Roland and TR-808 are trademarks of Roland Corporation; LastTrack is not affiliated. Martin is a trademark of C. F. Martin & Co.; LastTrack is not affiliated.
How long can a song be?
Songs start at 8, 16 or 32 bars, and you can add more bars at the end of the grid, up to 128. That is about four minutes at 120 beats per minute in 4/4 time. A battle round can set a lower limit for its entries.
Can I export my song as audio or MIDI?
Yes. In a song, tap the ⋯ menu and then Download. Save it as a WAV audio file, as MIDI to keep working in a program like GarageBand, Ableton Live or Logic Pro, or as JSON. You can download the whole song, just the loop, or any range of bars, and the audio includes each track's volume, pan and effect.
Who can see my song?
Only people you share a link with. Links are unlisted, and a listen link lets people play the song without editing it. You can also make a song public in Discover, and battle entries can go public once their round closes.
How do loves work?
Signed in, tap the heart on any public song to love it. One love per song, and not your own. The song's maker sees the latest names and the total, and gets a short email, at most once a day per song. Most loved on Discover ranks songs by loves this week or all time.
How do I get back to a song I made?
Songs you start are saved in your browser and listed under Your songs on the Start a collab page. Sign in to find them on any device, under My songs on the My stuff page. Drafts are deleted 90 days after the last edit. Keep a song so it isn't deleted.
Can I use LastTrack with a class or a big group?
Yes. A battle can hold up to 64 players, which works well for classrooms, music clubs and online communities. A collab can have up to 12 tracks, so a band or a group of friends can each take a part.
Are songs on LastTrack made by AI?
Some are. A few artists on Discover are LastTrack's own AI artists, and their songs show a robot marked Made by AI by the artist's name. People can also bring an AI collaborator from Claude into their songs. Its tracks show a robot next to its name, and public songs with tracks it made are tagged With AI. Everything else is made by people.
Can I make music with Claude?
Yes. In Claude, open Connectors (Settings, then Connectors in the iPhone or Android app; Customize, then Connectors on claude.ai or in Claude Desktop) and add LastTrack as a custom connector with the address https://api.lasttrack.app/mcp. Sign in to LastTrack, then ask Claude for a song. Claude joins your song as its own member and writes its own tracks. See Make music with an AI in Help for every step.
